PH Matters issue no 6– Spring 2009

A message from the Managing Director
Welcome to the latest issue of our quarterly e-newsletter PH-MATTERS, which this month features a diverse range of projects and news.

Whilst in the current climate everyone is turning their attention to the public sector, we are proud of our long established experience in this sector and are pleased to feature some recently completed projects along with news of some recent successes.

As reported in an earlier edition, PierceHill has established links with South Bank University and is delighted that Emma Daws has become the first winner of the PierceHill sponsored prize.

Thanks for taking time to read our news.

PierceHill on Award Winning School project in Cornwall

A new Design and Technology Block at Falmouth School, in Falmouth, Cornwall where PierceHill undertook the pre-contract quantity surveying has seen incredible success for its award winning design for architect, Urban Salon. Malcolm Hill, Director of PierceHill says, “We are delighted to have been involved with this innovative and award winning school in Falmouth with the tender returns for this intricate building being in line with our cost advice.”

The project is the extension and refurbishment of Falmouth School 's existing 1960's design and technology block and came out of the Sorrell Foundation's ‘joinedupdesignforschool' programme where school pupils are given control and responsibility as clients within design projects.

The scheme has won the Schools that Inspire category at the Timber in Construction Awards, the Best Education Project at the Offsite Construction Awards and has been shortlisted for a LABC Building Excellence Award 2009. The school is also currently shortlisted for the RIBA Awards.

Demelza Hospice Care for Children in Eltham approved for opening

The new Demelza Hospice Care for Children in Eltham is now complete and ready to accept the first children and families.  The staff have been recruited and the building has recently passed the inspection by the Healthcare Commission, which enables us to commence offering our services.

"I am delighted by the success of the project to build Demelza Hospice Care for Children's new facility in Eltham, South London. PierceHill played a major part throughout the project, which has enabled it to be delivered on budget and with minimal delay.  We have held a number of pre-opening Open Days at which healthcare professionals, major donors and supporters and others have been able to visit to see the new building for themselves; and without exception the feedback has been positive. Our regulator, The Healthcare Commission has recently conducted its inspection and approved the premises (unusual to pass at the first ask with a brand new building), and this now enables us to start up our services.

Framework Success – Double Award in Public Sector

We are delighted to announce that we have been successful in gaining appointments onto consultancy frameworks with East London NHS Foundation Trust and Kent County Council. These awards have involved intense prequalification and tender processes and are a direct result of a specific and targeted strategy aimed at the public and health sectors over the past year. Stephen Tandy comments “Whilst the economic downturn is affecting all sectors of the construction market, we hope these two framework appointments will contribute to our continued success and help to offset the effects of the downturn in the commercial sector”.

New Clinic in the heart of Soho

PierceHill acted as Employer's Agent for The Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust's high quality conversion of offices into a Clinic in Dean Street in Soho.

Stephen Tandy, Managing Director of PierceHill said “Our client wanted a modern and welcoming environment in which to deliver a number of first-class sexual health and HIV-related services, including a walk-in one hour facility for HIV testing and Hepatitis B vaccinations. These facilities replaced the former Victoria Clinic and included the refurbishment of three new reception areas, interview rooms and clinics, pharmacy, laboratories, staff office spaces over five floors and conference areas.”

PierceHill have continued success in retail roll-outs despite the downturn

“A new Mamas & Papas Store in London's Westfield Shopping Centre has recently been completed, with PierceHill providing Quantity Surveying services for the construction works. The project, involving the fitting-out of 8,100 square feet of prime retail space arranged on two floors, is the 10th successfully delivered with PierceHill's involvement.

Continuing in assisting Mamas & Papas to expand their presence in a particularly challenging retail market, PierceHill are helping with the design development for a store at Cardiff presently undergoing construction on site with further UK stores planned for opening throughout Summer and Autumn 09.”
