A message from the Managing Director

Health and education provide the focus of this month’s seasonal issue of PHMATTERS. Our three featured projects highlight the skills and expertise that PierceHill brings to projects in these important sectors.

It’s appropriate at this time of year that one of our projects – Demelza House Children’s Hospice – is also our chosen Christmas charity. Demelza is an organisation providing hospice care for over 450 children in the South East of England with life-limiting illnesses. This year, PierceHill will be making a donation to the charity instead of sending out Christmas cards.

Thanks for your continued interest. I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year!

Child Project set to make a difference

PierceHill is the appointed Quantity Surveyor for a new six-bedded children's hospice under construction in Eltham in the London Borough of Greenwich for Demelza Hospice Care for Children. Demelza is an organisation providing hospice care for children with life-limiting illnesses across Kent, East Sussex and South London.

Demelza’s Child Project will provide residential short breaks for children in a home-from-home setting with en-suite accommodation for families wishing to stay with their child. The new centre will also offer day care by professional carers to help families during the day as well as ‘hospice-at-home’ services by nurses and carers in the family home.

Tim Blair, Demelza's Project Manager, says: "With the excellent facilities and specialised equipment going into the new building, we will be able to make a difference to countless families and help them cope with their pressing needs for as long as they wish.”

The structure of the new hospice is nearing completion with internal installations, fitting out, recruitment of care staff and the grant of registration by the Healthcare Commission all expected to be completed by the end of 2008.

Billericay school scheme doing very well

St John’s School in Billericay, Essex, is an independent co-educational day school providing first class education for children aged from 3-16 years. Working in close association with Croydon-based architects Geraghty Taylor, Pierce Hill is performing a full range of quantity surveying and construction cost management services for a 5,000 m2 new build school that will provide a flexible and stimulating physical environment for its pupils.

Under the 'round table' construction management of John O’Neill and Partners, the first phase will include all teaching rooms including specialist rooms, a new sports hall, changing facilities and a drama studio.

Planning permission for the £8m project was granted earlier this year with the first phase of construction scheduled to start in July 2008.

Pierce Hill practices partnering in Surrey

The HOCA Practice has appointed PierceHill to act as quantity surveyor on a £1.8m refurbishment and new build project at Green Wrythe Primary School in Carshalton, Surrey. The school caters for children from nursery to Year 6 and is expanding to include a specialist autistic unit, new car parking facilities and refurbishment of the existing school.

The project is split into three phases and provides the challenge of working in a ‘live’ environment around an occupied school. The centre piece is the new build Special Educational Needs building which will provide the council with a much needed facility.

This project is one of several schools projects that PierceHill is working on with The HOCA Practice for The London Borough of Sutton.

Chance meeting for new Sevenoaks recruit

Trainee surveyor Peri Young is the latest recruit to PierceHill’s ranks. Peri has joined our Sevenoaks team in Kent following an introduction to the firm by director Andy Pilcher.

“After completing my A-levels at SEEVIC College in Benfleet, Essex, I was unsure what my next step would be,” explained Peri. “Whilst working on site for my dad’s construction company I met Andy who invited me to spend a few days in the office to see what being a surveyor entails. After a few days, I soon realised that this was the job for me and now here I am!”

Under PierceHill’s sponsorship, Peri is currently studying for a degree in quantity surveying.

PierceHill launches university links

Pierce Hill’s association with London South Bank University (LSBU) was officially launched in November 2007 by director Malcolm Hill and marketing consultant Sarah Chapman who presented a series of lectures to LSBU students studying quantity surveying.

“Our presentations focused on strategic marketing theory as well as providing a practical introduction to the world of quantity surveying and the rewards it can bring as a chosen career path,” said Malcolm.

PierceHill is offering a cash prize to postgraduates enrolled on the University’s MSc Quantity Surveying course for the 2007/08 academic year, part of a wider initiative by the practice to identify and recruit the future talent of the industry. Visit the PierceHill website for more details.

Do the walk of life at Christmas?

PierceHill’s chosen Christmas charity, Demelza House Children’s Hospice, has embarked on a new fund-raising initiative to help pay for the construction of its new hospice in Eltham.

Launched by sports presenter and former England international footballer, Gary Lineker, the Demelza Walk of Life appeal will create a footpath around three sides of the new children’s hospice.

If you would like to become a founder of the new children’s hospice with your name and message engraved in a choice of brick paving or granite stone, visit the website :www.demelzawalkoflife.co.uk

“Help us build a path around our new children’s hospice in South London and be part of adding life to days when days cannot be added to life,” said Gary Lineker, whose oldest son George survived leukaemia as a baby.
